Used one-horse trailers at Remolque Caballos
A used single-stall trailer is where the saving is proportionally largest: these are trailers that see little use, often for one horse and short trips, and they reach the second-hand market with few kilometres on them. That same fact hides a trap. A trailer left standing for years degrades faster than one that rolls: tyres craze in the sun, brakes seize, and damp works on the floor where nobody sees it.
The floor before the bodywork
Bodywork gets repainted; the floor cannot be disguised. It is the part that carries 600 kg on the move and the first to rot, because it takes urine and damp on every journey. Climb in and walk the whole floor, especially the corners and under the rubber mats. Any area that gives, sounds hollow or has darkened means replacing the whole floor.
Brakes and axles: the check nobody sees
Rubber suspension axles need no greasing and last, but they tire: if the trailer visibly sits down on one side or the tyres wear on the inside, the axle has collapsed, and replacing it costs a third of the trailer. The overrun brake should give firmly and spring back on its own. If the drawbar slides in with no resistance, the damper is dead.
The paperwork is worth as much as the trailer
A trailer with no technical data sheet and no plate can neither be driven nor transferred, and putting it right is slow and expensive. Ask for the data sheet, the registration document and a valid roadworthiness certificate before you even go and see the vehicle. Check that the gross weight on the data sheet matches the manufacturer's plate riveted to the chassis. If they differ, the trailer has been modified.
Every used trailer we sell goes through our workshop before it is listed: floor, axles, brakes, wiring and tyres. It is delivered with the roadworthiness test passed and the transfer of ownership included.
